Experimental Saturday: tried a camp flag finish on this forthcoming canvas with grommets, Heat & Bond, and a PRAYER (several).

Some takeaways:
I knew I didn’t want cording so the edges are exposed if you look closely. I’ll definitely have a binding stitch added before I try this again.

I added one layer of batting but I think I’ll skip it next time. I like the added depth but the canvas itself is sturdy enough.

I sewed the layers together with invisible thread (Guterman) in the well of the stitching between the background and the navy border. This helped hide it but it left an open edge so you can see the canvas if you really examine it.

I really love this style but it needs some work before I give any type of advice or tutorial, just wanted to spread the gospel of experimentation! Had this rattling around for way too long and so happy I put my fingers to work.

Cutting Photo Fabric:
Would you believe this is the first time I’ve had to cut photo fabric?
I saw I didn’t have a lot of room to waste and wanted to keep these two cute faces in line so here’s what I did:
✂️ Traced and cut the shape of the front canvas from a clear ziplock bag (any clear material will do)
🎯 made sure to center the clear circle on the photo and traced a larger circle for cutting, adding roughly an additional 3/4” inch
🪡 laced and proceeded as usual!

Overzealous corders: this Tip Tuesday is for you!
I try to hard to twist as much as I can without getting these little knots but it’s inevitable. I figured out that some gentle pulling and stretching gets rid of them while not compromising the twist. Enjoy!

I picked some of my absolutely favorite prints, hunted for the best vintage options, and of course included the queen’s fabric herself, Liberty. All are in 6”x6” cuts, perfect for ornaments and small projects and can be customized to include matching cording and a 2025 charm so you can make the jump into needlepoint finishing you told yourself you’d take.

I call it The Finisher’s Curse 🧙🏻‍♀️

This is my pledge class for 2024: a single ornament I finished for our tree that was really more an experiment for a canvas and simple frame finishing. Do I have canvases that are done? Absolutely. Do I feel like I have time to finish my own canvases while working through yours? Not a chance.

Now, The Finishers Benediction: Thousands of my tiny, though mostly invisible, stitches are going up on your trees this year all around the country. That is a different kind of pledge class, unique to finishers and so, so, appreciated by me.

Finishers, how we feeling? Who needs a cup of coffee?

It’s Finishing Tip Tuesday!
This one I learned pretty early: when I’m stitching two cookies together I stitch front to back so I don’t run the risk of snagging canvas threads as I’m pulling my needle in invisible thread through the two cookies. It also helps to try and sew in between two stitches, especially if you have decorative stitches, so you’re not pulling and distorting the thread.
Needlepoint finishing is such a joy when you have help and resources. I love sharing tidbits like this to make it just a little bit easier 💙
